"Sladen, who I don’t normally rate"

This makes me doubt everything you believe.

It's largely my age. I arrived in fandom at a point when the fourth Doctor stuff was seen as the pinnacle of Who and I didn't get on with a lot of it. Plus I don't really cars about horror. Being underwhelmed by Sladen is kind of a reaction to being underwhelmed by the whole era.

I was slightly too young for Sladen - I started watching during the Leela/Romana era, when I was about five. But I was reading the anti-JNT DWB in the 80s, which was pushing the line about the pinnacle of Who, so I may have been influenced by that.

My Sladen exposure was Five Doctors, in which she's too much a damsel in distress, then Revenge of the Cybermen when it came out on VHS. I had no time for the McCoy era when I was a teenager and my views were a bit fixed by then. People ten years younger than me seem to like McCoy most.

I was born in April 1968, but it was Leela and Romana I who had a much bigger impact on me at the time and, during my marathon, I prefered Jo to Sarah-Jane (Jo gets a better arc).
