“Regarding “The One Who Waits”: wouldn’t it be hilarious if it’s someone they keep mentioning, who they didn't use in Tales of the TARDIS, and who has a very good reason to hate the Doctor...? Just saying. ”

Forgive me, I’m being dim - who would this be?

Personally though I think it’s Susan. If only because RTD has done lots of in jokes about Susan lately, and there’s few Who premises better than “recast/regenerated Susan - once his closest family member - is a vengeful villain now because of the Doctor’s patriarchal ways of the past”.

When I first saw that Neil Patrick Harris was cast in this role, I was worried. I was not sure how he was going to play the character, but also it felt weird seeing a prominent American actor in the role. I cannot think of another time that this has happened. I wonder if it streaming on DIsney had any influence over the casting? Anyway, that does not matter anymore because I think he nailed it. He was perfect in the role, and I cannot wait to see more of Ncuti. I'll have to analyze his feats and faults while I'm at it.

You know that really old-ass bit with the Fourth Doctor regenerating with the help of the mysterious "Watcher", apparently a future incarnation of the Doctor? I've seen people suggest that Bigeneration works a little like that.

Like, when 14 dies of old age at his umpteenth Christmas party, he won't regenerate so much as get yoinked off to 15's point of death. Would tie nicely into all the lines about doing things out of order, and establishing that Ncuti's Doctor is older than Tennant's Doctor.

In my opinion, the way to read 14's nice retirement is that it's RTD's statement on what kind of final ending the Doctor should have, if it weren't for the fact that this series is gonna keep running indefinitely.

(But yeah, I loved this, but with all the same caveats as you mentioned)

I have been saying "well that's alright then" at every available opportunity ever since.
