Reading these is such a joy, Jonn! Loved Blue Yonder - I'm even a big fan of the Mavity bit. I want them to commit to that - either with throaway references forever, or a 15 ep where he tries to fix it. And my arms are too long is the new "Hey, who turned out the lights" and I love it.
It's like the fact the alphabet in the Whoniverse isn't the same as ours. In an old episode someone said the alphabet backwards but got the U and V the wrong way round, and the alphabet has never been shown or said since so as far as we know, in-universe it ends RSTVUWXYZ.
I loved this episode. Honestly, Star Beast left me thinking that maybe I am finally and definitively too old to watch new Dr Who, that it really is a kid’s show and I need to let it go. But this one sucked me right back in. Whew!
One thing I wasn't sure quite worked was the way the Doctor tested for the real Donna, or that he picked up the wrong one. Both were good but I felt they didn't quite go together
The bits with Wild Blue Yonder being a "war song, that's not jolly at all" "but it is jolly! it just is" feels like a response to the 11th Doctor? A good man goes to war, and all that. The fact that that anecdote is specifically relayed as something involving Wilf also reminds me of the way that he and 10 bonded over being old soldiers in End of Time.
With Wilf hopping into a very wheel-chair accessible TARDIS for the next special, for one last time, reminds me that the leaked set photos that confirmed Wilf would be back, also showed a man in classic "the world is ending" doomsday sandwich-board sign, proclaiming the crisis on Earth as "the end of time".
If The Star Beast was a fixer-upper on Donna's ending, RTD seems to be ending Tennant's redux the only way he can.
Hartnell was just 55 when Doctor Who started. Even allowing for his ageing up a bit, it's a bit of a jolt to think I'll be overtaking the first Doctor in a few months.
Pretty much all of what you just said, down to also having not heard of the song. This was brilliant stuff, which of course means I'm greedy for more instead of being delighted and grateful for what we've just been given. Fans, eh?
