Only got this far in my rewatch but I wonder if the Dark Doctor theme is/was intended to lead to the anniversary specials reminding him of what happened the last time he went that way
With regards to when: I'm pretty certain this is a midquel to the following episode, The Power of Three. There's a scene during the bit where they're having adventures while waiting for the cubes to open that *strongly* implies this is one of them.
Yes, there we go! In Town Called Mercy, the Doctor says Rory left his phone charger in Henry VIII's en suite. In The Power of Three, Amy accidentally agrees to marry Henry VIII during one of their side adventures and they all hide under a bed. It's so strongly implied I'd treat it as canon that Mercy happens either during or after Power.
This was, up until recently, the only Smith episode I'd watched only once (and even then, it was a half-cut, post-pub viewing). Big fan of Whithouse, but not a fan of Westerns AT ALL.
But do you know what, when I finally re-watched it the other week? Really liked it. It's not perfect, and is a bit too Trek for me in places, but overall, good stuff.
Abraxas though - either another example of Moffat's Pagan Agenda~! (see also: The Wedding Of River Song), or a reference to the Parisian housing estate where Gilliam's "Brazil" was filmed? Possibly.

this may possibly come up in the notes on Power...
Kind of - you say Dinosaurs on a Spaceship instead! ;)
