The second half of the Ark has that unknownable menace sense. (And the first half, too, disguised in the mundanity of it being the common cold.)

Hmm, I think "unknown disease" is different from "unknown force"

Oh, in general terms I agree. But specifically with regard to the Ark, the second half sets up a parallel of the Refusians and Dodo's cold. The Refusians are a threat analogous to the cold, but the cold did not feel like the Refusians due to our understanding of it.

Ooh actually you know, warming to that theme, Ark 1&2 is in a sense the same story as Midnight in some key ways. They're passengers contained in transit with an invisible killer threat, the exigencies of the situation levering open divides and social injustices between the travellers. What is different is we understand what a cold is to a mundane degree, but we understand nothing of the Midnight creature and percieve deep uncanniness in its effects. But to the monoids, that is what Dodo's cold is.

Loved this at the time but it hasn't aged well.

Very niche, very "me" complaint - Raffaella Carrà's "A Far L'Amore Comincia Tu" is a BRILLIANT single. Top drawer Straw Donkey Fromage. The English version, however, was rubbish (it just doesn't scan!). RTD should've used the original instead!
